Another Atheist Blogger Hacked To Death In Bangladesh

Whoever kills an innocent is as it is as if he has killed all mankind and whoever saves a person, it is as if he has saved all mankind

The above lines are often quoted by Islam apologists to show that the Quran is against the killing of infidels. U.S president Barack Obama quoted these lines in a speech at Cairo in 2009. Meanwhile Islamists in Bangladesh have successfully killed "all of mankind" for the fourth time within this year. The moderates and apologists maintain a silence over the repeated failure of the Bangladesh Government to save "all of mankind".

On the surface, the above statement seems to be the epitome of Humanism and tolerance. So, why would the follower of a religion that preaches that killing an innocent is equivalent to killing all of humanity kill an innocent blogger? Clearly, the killers do not represent the 'true' Islam.Right?

Wrong! These killings begin to make sense once we take a look at at actual verses from the Quran.

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.
and
Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment

The Quran permits killing someone for the crime of murder (or to save someone from murder) and for spreading "corruption". The muslim apologists may offer that a person who spreads corruption is not an innocent but what is the corruption that the Quran is speaking of? Is it not anything that is deemed unislamic by a cleric like homosexuality, teaching evolution, reading or writing the "wrong" kind of book, wearing the "wrong" type of clothes listening to the "wrong" music and even following the "wrong" sect of Islam.
No religion can sanction the killing of innocents. Any such religion would be rejected by any person with the basic sense of morality. So, instead of recommending the killing of innocents, Islam messes with the definition of innocence. These killings will continue until the cause behind them is recognized and addressed and any attempt to protect Islam from scrutiny by saying that the killers have misinterpreted Islam will only lead to the continuation of such horrific incidents.

If you are a Muslim or an Islamic apologist who disagrees with me you don't have to debate me. Invest your time in convincing the
Ansar Al Islam, the Bangladesh branch of Al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), which has claimed responsibility for murdering Niloy Neel that it was wrong to kill an innocent blogger, Protest against the killing of freethinkers and rationalists on the streets and on social media. If for every fallen advocate of freethought and rationalism a hundred Muslims come forward to take his place, I would be glad to accept that i was wrong.

Did Pythagoras plagiarize Indian Mathematicians?

In the Last few years, the claim that  the theorem that is known as Pythagoras theorem was actually stolen from an Indian mathematician named Baudhayana has become increasingly popular especially among the right-wing Hindus. Several websites run by right wing Hindus decided to expose this fact and how the west has been shamelessly feeding off Indian discoveries without acknowledging it.

The claims made by such websites range from "Indians knew Pythagoras Theorem before Pythagoras but the western academia and the secular Indians deny this." to "Pythagoras stole his theorem from the Indians."

What's Surprising here is the fact that there is nothing here to expose. The fact that Pythagoras theorem was not discovered by Pythagoras is well known. The fact is mentioned in Wikipedia along with Baudhayana.Pythagoras is only credited with providing a proof for the theorem. Most websites on Pythagoras theorem will acknowledge that the theorem was known to the Babylonians, Chinese and Indians.

The accusation that the secular deny the discoveries of ancient Indian scientists is not true either. NCERT text books mention both Baudhayana and Shridharacharya in the relevant sections. Aryabhatta, Bhashkara, Shushruta and Charaka are also mentioned in the NCERT textbooks. If anyone is denying the achievements its because of their own personal ignorance and  not because of their political affiliations (and hence they can be corrected by citing the references from Wikipedia and other sources)

What the right wing Hindu organizations are trying to do is to created a feeling of Hindu supremacism, paranoia and radical nationalism among the Hindus to serve their own agendas. We need to keep in mind is that such petty nationalism is not conducive for the development of scientific temperament and general well being of a nation. Such narrow minded nationalism has been the cause of tragedies like the rise of Nazis in Germany. Scientific achievements need to be viewed as the collective success of the human civilization and Indians and Greeks should not go around beating their chests about what they achieved a thousand years ago, nor should a person coming from a country whose history isn't as glorious as that of Indians, Greeks, Mesopotamians, Egyptians and other great civilizations walk with their head hung low because his nation had a much humbler history. Science should always remain above petty politics.
