In the Last few years, the claim that the theorem that is known as Pythagoras theorem was actually stolen from an Indian mathematician named Baudhayana has become increasingly popular especially among the right-wing Hindus. Several websites run by right wing Hindus decided to expose this fact and how the west has been shamelessly feeding off Indian discoveries without acknowledging it.
The claims made by such websites range from "Indians knew Pythagoras Theorem before Pythagoras but the western academia and the secular Indians deny this." to "Pythagoras stole his theorem from the Indians."
What's Surprising here is the fact that there is nothing here to expose. The fact that Pythagoras theorem was not discovered by Pythagoras is well known. The fact is mentioned in Wikipedia along with Baudhayana.Pythagoras is only credited with providing a proof for the theorem. Most websites on Pythagoras theorem will acknowledge that the theorem was known to the Babylonians, Chinese and Indians.
The accusation that the secular deny the discoveries of ancient Indian scientists is not true either. NCERT text books mention both Baudhayana and Shridharacharya in the relevant sections. Aryabhatta, Bhashkara, Shushruta and Charaka are also mentioned in the NCERT textbooks. If anyone is denying the achievements its because of their own personal ignorance and not because of their political affiliations (and hence they can be corrected by citing the references from Wikipedia and other sources)

What the right wing Hindu organizations are trying to do is to created a feeling of Hindu supremacism, paranoia and radical nationalism among the Hindus to serve their own agendas. We need to keep in mind is that such petty nationalism is not conducive for the development of scientific temperament and general well being of a nation. Such narrow minded nationalism has been the cause of tragedies like the rise of Nazis in Germany. Scientific achievements need to be viewed as the collective success of the human civilization and Indians and Greeks should not go around beating their chests about what they achieved a thousand years ago, nor should a person coming from a country whose history isn't as glorious as that of Indians, Greeks, Mesopotamians, Egyptians and other great civilizations walk with their head hung low because his nation had a much humbler history. Science should always remain above petty politics. Links
